Mujović: Both Marko Miljanov and Radosav Ljumović are important to us, the final decision must reflect the predominant view of the public

Ensuring the independence of cultural institutions is an obligation of every mature and democratic society - Podgorica Mayor Saša Mujović told Pobjeda, commenting on the ongoing debate surrounding the decision by the Governing Board of the „Radosav Ljumović“ Library to rename the institution after Marko Miljanov.

Mujović stressed that the Library's Governing Board has the right to express its views and make decisions independently, adding that its members should not be condemned in advance for allegedly acting in bad faith or seeking to undermine the state.

- At the same time, any decision that stirs public debate, carries significant implications, or conveys explicit or implicit messages requires broad public dialogue, consultations, and the full involvement of all relevant stakeholders. This is not something that should be decided hastily - Mujović said.

According to the mayor, both Marko Miljanov and Radosav Ljumović represent important pillars of Montenegro's cultural and historical heritage.

- Both Marko Miljanov and Radosav Ljumović are important to us. We value humanity and heroism (the original is „čojstvo i junaštvo“, which is a traditional Montenegrin ethical ideal combining humantiy, compassion, moral integrity, and bravery in defence of others), just as we value anti-fascism. There is therefore no need for heightened tensions - Mujović said.

He concluded that the final decision should reflect the predominant view of the public.

- The final decision must be aligned with the predominant public view. And that is exactly what will happen - Mujović said.
