Montenegro records a worrying number of suicides year after year. Data from the Ministry of the Interior show that over the past three years, dozens of citizens have taken their own lives. Experts warn that this is a complex issue, but also that prevention is possible, reports RTV Podgorica.

In the period from 2023 to the end of 2025, a total of 283 suicides were recorded in Montenegro, which means that, on average, one citizen took their own life every four days. The majority of cases involve men - 220 of them, accounting for nearly 78 percent of the total.

Psychologist Nikola Ralević warns that the causes of suicidal behavior are complex and often multiple.

- When we talk about factors that increase the risk of suicidal behavior, we primarily consider whether a person has a history of other mental health problems, especially depression, whether there is substance abuse or addiction, whether the person has been exposed to a traumatic experience, or has been a victim of abuse or violence. These individuals often experience feelings of helplessness or hopelessness. They are also often discriminated against or have a poor socio-economic status - said Ralević.

He emphasizes that it is crucial to recognize the problem in time, but also to break down prejudices that often prevent people from seeking help.

- We must say that it is very important for people to understand that those who struggle with suicidal behavior or thoughts see their situation as hopeless and do not perceive any other solution. They should not be labeled as weak or cowardly, because that leads to stigmatization and discourages them from seeking help - Ralević stressed.

He warns that certain signs can be recognized early, but are often overlooked or ignored by those around the person.

- This problem is very complex and cannot be reduced to a single factor. Families often feel guilt and regret when a member attempts suicide. It is important to note that some warning signs may include mood changes, irritability, or a tendency toward risky behavior. A person may express thoughts that life is not worth living, feel useless, or see no meaning or purpose. Changes in sleep are also common, either insomnia or sleeping all day - Ralević stated.

For more effective prevention, it is crucial to speak more openly about mental health and reduce stigma so that people seek help in time, authorities emphasize. They also highlight the importance of accessible professional support, including 24-hour psychological helplines.
