Shabunin opened fire on police, then took his own life

The suspect in the triple murder, Russian national Mikhail Nikolaevich Shabunin (30), was found and located in a forest above the Topla neighbourhood in Herceg Novi, where he subsequently opened fire on police officers and then took his own life.

According to the statement, officers from the Special Police Unit, the Special Operations Police Unit, the „South“ Regional Security Centre and the Border Police Sector, using specialised equipment and a helicopter belonging to the Armed Forces of Montenegro, located and isolated the active threat - the suspect in the triple murder - at around 3:35 a.m. last night.

- After the suspect was surrounded and found himself in a situation with no way out, he opened fire in the direction of police officers and then took his own life using a firearm - the statement said.

The Police Directorate thanked all members of the police, commanders and police officers for their „uncompromising commitment, professionalism and dedication in resolving this crisis situation“.

At the same time, the families of the victims were offered the deepest and most sincere condolences.

Police officers from the Police Administration are continuing their activities in cooperation with the Higher State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica, with the aim of establishing all the circumstances surrounding the incident, including its cause and motive, and fully clarifying the entire situation.

Shabunin is suspected of killing Podgorica residents Petar Globarević (24) and Nemanja Kapor (20), as well as Momir Radonjić (67) from Danilovgrad, yesterday at the „Česka zbrojevka“. It is suspected that he subsequently travelled to Herceg Novi by taxi.
