Milatović calls on MPs to support constitutional amendments: It is time to take a new step towards the EU together

Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović has called on all members of the Parliament of Montenegro to support the proposed constitutional amendments and thereby contribute, as he put it, to achieving the country’s key national goal - full membership of Montenegro in the European Union.
- We are all aware in Montenegro that things are not perfect, that unresolved issues remain and that there are reasons for mutual distrust among the actors on our political scene - Milatović said.
However, he noted, it is precisely in such circumstances that a sense of responsibility towards the state is demonstrated.
- Montenegro today enjoys strong support from its European partners to become a new EU member state as soon as possible. We must not miss this opportunity because of domestic political differences - Milatović said.
According to him, it is particularly important for the constitutional amendments to be adopted now in order to create the conditions for the technical stage of the accession negotiations to be completed by the end of the year and for preparations to begin for the signing of Montenegro’s Treaty of Accession to the European Union.
Time, Milatović noted, is an important factor, „particularly in view of the upcoming election cycles in EU member states, which could affect the pace of our European integration process“.
- Montenegro’s successful organisation of the EU-Western Balkans Summit further confirmed that our country can be a reliable partner and an important actor in the European integration of the region. The event was not merely a diplomatic success, but also a strong political message from European leaders that Montenegro brings European partners together and contributes to our shared European future - Milatović concluded.
