Lakić: Serious security allegations require an institutional response

Serious security allegations made public in recent days require a timely and clear institutional response – said Deputy Secretary General to the President of Montenegro Marko Lakić.

Prime Minister Milojko Spajić said several days ago, he recalled, that there was serious operational information about coordinated activities aimed at destabilising Montenegro, involving officials from at least two countries in the region.

- Given the seriousness of these allegations, President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović called an urgent session of the Defence and Security Council so that the competent authorities could present the information at their disposal and provide a comprehensive assessment of the security situation. The Council did not meet today, with the explanation that the National Security Council should meet first - Lakić said.

However, he added, the public still has no information as to when the National Security Council will meet, or what steps the competent authorities have taken in the meantime in response to the allegations made by the Prime Minister.

- When such serious claims are made publicly, it is important that they are followed by a timely institutional response. Citizens have the right to know whether there is a threat to Montenegro’s stability, what the competent authorities have established, and what measures the state is taking - Lakić stressed.

Therefore, he added, they expect the National Security Council to meet as soon as possible, after which the competent authorities should present the relevant information to the Defence and Security Council as well.

- Questions of national security require facts, responsibility and a serious institutional approach - Lakić concluded.
